Epidemiology and Arbovirus Group

Epidemiology and Arbovirus Group is conducting epidemiological research on elucidation of disease dynamics and control measues for the disease that occurs in the livestock "populations" at the Tsukuba Research base and at the Kagoshima Research base, we are conducting research on viral infections (arbovirus infections) transmitted by arthropods such as insects.

In addition to clarifying the risk of infection of classical swine fever virus and highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in livestock and wild animals, we also analyze the entire genome information of the virus to elucidate the transmission and spread factors of the virus. Computer simulations are also used to evaluate the effectiveness of current countermeasures against diseases such as bovine Johne's disease. We are also working with Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to develop a system for collecting and analyzing the results of inspections conducted in each prefecture via the Internet.

In arbovirus infection research, we are elucidating the genetic properties and pathogenicity of arboviruses in cattle, as well as the distribution of arthropods that transmit mosquitoes and biting midges, and their ability to transmit viruses. In this way, we will conduct research on arbovirus infections in cattle from both viral and arthropod vectors. With the addition of epidemiological analysis, we will strengthen the monitoring and diagnosis system of arboviral infections.
