Cross search system of genetic resources (PGR-Gateway) by data collaboration of NARO Genebank and National Bioresource Project

- Aiming for the realization of efficient access to genetic resources -

The National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), National Institute of Genetics and Kyoto University have developed a system (PGR-Gateway) that enables cross-searching of rice and wheat genetic resources among the genetic resources of plants preserved at NARO Genebank and the National Bioresource Project (NBRP) and it was published on January 2019. By this system the access to genetic resource information has become more efficient.

Overview

Genetic resources are valuable asset for future humanity, directly utilized as agricultural products, medicines etc. and indirectly utilized for global environment protection. Some national research and development corporations, public experimental centers, universities, etc. collect and store genetic resources such as plant seeds, distribute genetic resources for research and education, and provide genetic resource information. There is a need for the development of an environment/circumstances where genetic resources can be efficiently searched, as the information about the kind of genetic resources and preserving institution is crucial for the users of genetic resources.
The NARO Genebank and the National Bioresource Project (NBRP), which are the representative plant preservation resource project in Japan, have developed a system (PGR-Gateway) that enables cross-searching of rice and wheat genetic resources (total of 27,000 rice and 29,000 wheat) preserved by them and published on January 7, 2019.
NARO Genebank preserves Research Center of Genetic Resourcesed on domestic and foreign varieties and breeding varieties as materials for future varietal improvement from the viewpoint of agricultural research whereas NBRP preserves a wide range of genetic resources including wild species and experimental strains from the viewpoint of life science research. Until now separate database has been created and information about the genetic resources has been published. One-stop search for rice and wheat plant genetic resources in Japan has been realized by means of PGR-Gateway, and hence genetic resource information can be accessed more efficiently.
In the future we are aiming to provide more advanced one stop search service for the Food & Agriculture Related Genetic Resources by means of adding rice and wheat genetic resources information held by other organizations or by adding target crops to the PGR-Gateway.
